Image
O ffsides have been a contentious topic for many years and now it seems that new technology will be trialled at the  2022 World Cup . Pierluigi Collina ,  FIFA 's chief refereeing officer and a former referee himself, has explained the plans behind semi-automated offsides, which will use between 10 and 12 cameras to aid referees and linesmen in making offside decisions. "VAR has had a very positive impact in football and the number of major mistakes is reduced, but there are areas where it can be improved and offside is one of them,"  Collina  told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "We are aware the process to check offsides can take longer, especially when it is very tight. We are also aware that the positioning of the lines may not be 100 percent accurate." Ibhais, former media manager at Qatar 2022 football world cup organisers, claims he was targeted for his stance towards migrant workers. Doha, Qatar  – The court of appeal in Qatar has upheld a guilty verdict handed out to a former 2022 FIFA World Cup official for bribery and misuse of funds but reduced his prison sentence from five years to three years. Abdullah Ibhais, a former media manager at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the body delivering next year’s World Cup, was arrested in 2019 and sentenced to five years in April 2021. He was released pending appeal but was arrested again last month before launching a hunger strike “as a final resort” to clear his name and “demand a fair trial”. Ibhais, a Jordanian national, claimed he was targeted for speaking out in favour of migrant workers who went on strike in August 2019. Bert van Marwijk to continue as manager in UAE's bid to reach 2022 World Cup

Image
Bert van Marwijk seems set to remain as UAE manager through to the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The Dutchman’s future has been the subject of much speculation following the national team’s exit earlier this month from the Fifa Arab Cup. The UAE were beaten 5-0 in the quarter-final by hosts Qatar, with the result prompting the resignation of the Football Association’s national teams and technical affairs committee. However, the new committee convened on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues, chief among them Van Marwijk’s position. The committee, led by former Al Nasr chairman Humaid Al Tayer, have recommended to the FA board of directors that Van Marwijk and his technical staff should continue. The committee, which also includes as consultant former Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado, confirmed its full support for the national team in their bid to reach the World Cup. The UAE resume the final round of qualification next month, with what promises t...

Qatar faces World Cup test after successfully hosting Arab Cup

Image
Qatar passed their first test with a successful hosting of the Arab Cup but bigger challenges lie ahead when 1.2 million fans and 32 international teams arrive for the World Cup one year from now. Algerian rejoicing at Saturday’s 2-0 extra-time win over Tunisia in the final — exactly a year before the 2022 World Cup decider, and with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the stands — will have been accompanied by satisfaction from Qatari officials. But now comes the hard work as Qatar prepares for the unique task of hosting a World Cup in and around a single city, Doha, with limited hotel accommodation and a transport network that is likely to come under strain. The wealthy Gulf state will also be bracing for intense scrutiny after coming under fire over the rights of the migrant labourers who have built its infrastructure, including the World Cup stadiums. And it will be mindful of a cultural gap when fans from around the world arrive in a conservative Muslim country with restricte...
