Building on its “Real Magic” global platform, which debuted last year, a new 60-second spot points to what’s possible as a crowd of jubilant fans seems to appear out of nowhere. Or do they? “As a fan, we have to always believe anything is possible,” Brad Ross, vp of global sports and entertainment marketing at the Coca-Cola Company, said in a statement about cheering for your favorite team despite the odds. “That’s where the magical dichotomy of Coca-Cola—one of the world’s oldest and most storied brands, but one that’s equally young at heart—comes to life.” Coca-Cola’s World Cup marketing push will also involve influencers, commercials featuring devoted fans, a digital hub where consumers can predict winners and, for the first time, a trophy tour to all 32 qualifying FIFA World Cup nations in the three mo...

FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?

Image
There's nothing like watching an action-packed penalty shoot-out pitting players against goalkeepers, with either one leaving as the hero or the villain. At any World Cup, taking a successful penalty means being remembered for years, if not decades. The origins of the penalty The penalty kick as we know it today was introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB's) Law 14 in 1891. In accordance with the law, a player who purposefully trips, holds, or handles the ball within 12 yards of their own goal line is liable for a penalty. What is it like to take a penalty at a World Cup? The USA's all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan, put away 57 goals in 157 games and was America's top scorer in World Cup history. Landon told Football Now that taking a penalty in football's biggest tournament is a "nerve-wracking" experience. "You are very aware that this is a big moment not only for you and your team but your country," Donovan told ...

FIFA suspends All India Football Federation

Image
The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes. The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs. The suspension means that the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022™, scheduled to take place in India on 11-30 October 2022, cannot currently be held in India as planned. FIFA is assessing the next steps with regard to the tournament and will refer the matter to the Bureau of the Council if and when necessary. FIFA is in constant constructive contact with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India and is hopeful that a positive outcome to the case may still be achieved.

Which top Premier League clubs will be hit most by World Cup? It's not good news for Chelsea

Image
There are just 97 days until the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup -- thanks to a last-minute change of plan by FIFA to allow host Qatar to kick off the tournament a day earlier than scheduled -- and there are already winners and losers in the Premier League as a consequence of the decision to stage football's biggest competition in the middle of the 2022-23 European club season. Liverpool and Arsenal have the ability to use the six-week shutdown in the club game to their advantage -- the Premier League goes into World Cup hibernation Nov. 13, resuming Dec. 26 -- but none of the so-called Big Six will be hit harder than Chelsea. Managers Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Pep Guardiola have all voiced their concerns about the potential impact of Qatar 2022 on the physical and psychological well-being of their players, but some clubs are in better shape than others to cope with the unique challenge of planning for the before, during and after of the World Cup, which now starts Nov. 20 a...

Brazil soccer body rejects WCup qualifier against Argentina

Image
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil insisted that it won't play its suspended World Cup qualifying match against Argentina next month, arguing Wednesday that the risks are too high ahead of the tournament in Qatar. The qualifier nearly one year ago in Sao Paulo was stopped by local health officials after six minutes due to COVID-19 protocols regarding four Argentinian players. FIFA fined the soccer bodies of both countries and demanded the match be played. Brazil’s confederation and Argentina’s federation took the case to the Court for Arbitration of Sport, which is expected to rule later in August. The game would be in September but FIFA has not set a date. Brazil coach Tite does not want to play the match due to risks of injuries, suspensions and a potential boycott by the Argentinians, according to Brazilian confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues. Brazilian media has reported the Selecao would rather play two friendlies in Europe. “We will reach out to FIFA so this match is not played....

World Cup 2022: Morocco part ways with coach Vahid Halilhodzic before Qatar finals

Image
Morocco have parted company with national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic just three months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The country's football federation (FRMF) said the decision was taken because of disagreements on how to prepare the Atlas Lions for the finals. "The two parties have agreed to part ways amicably," a statement from the FRMF said. Halilhodzic, 69, took charge of the North Africans in August 2019. He led the side to the quarter-finals of this year's Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and then secured World Cup qualification in March following a 5-2 aggregate win over DR Congo. The Bosnian's departure clears the path for the return of Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech to the Morocco squad, following a highly publicised spat involving the pair. The 29-year-old quit international football in February and then turned down a call-up for March's World Cup play-off against DR Congo - but FMRF president Fouzi Lekjaa subsequently said the door was open f...

World Cup 2022: Tournament set to start one day early with Qatar v Ecuador

Image
The World Cup is set to start one day earlier than planned on Sunday, 20 November with hosts Qatar taking on Ecuador. The Group A opener was due to be played on 21 November at 16:00 GMT, as the third match of the competition. The opening match of the tournament was to be Senegal against the Netherlands at 10:00, earlier on the Monday. However, the administrative arm of world governing body Fifa has submitted a proposal to move the Qatar game. It followed discussions with Qatar and their opponents Ecuador, after receiving a request from the South American confederation Conmebol. It fits in with the tradition of either the hosts or the holders being involved in the opening match. The final decision will be made by the bureau of the Fifa council, which comprises the six confederation presidents, plus Fifa president Gianni Infantino. If it is approved as expected, it would not change the release dates for players, and Senegal against the Netherlands would be switched to 16:00 on the ...

Deschamps is confident that Pogba will play for France at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Image
Paul Pogba's participation at the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar is in doubt, but France coach Didier Deschamps believes the midfielder will be fit in time. Having rejoined Juventus from Manchester United on a free transfer this summer, Pogba injured the meniscus in his right knee, which could see his calendar year ended. But in an interview with Le Parisien, Deschamps was clear in his belief that Pogba would take part in Qatar. "His participation at the World Cup is not up for question," Deschamps asserted. Pogba opted against undergoing surgery on his knee, as that would have ruled him out for the winter tournament. Instead, he could return within five weeks and ahead of the November World Cup start date. "We're talking about important players," Deschamps said of Pogba and N'Golo Kante's current situations. "They're key, they've a lot of experience, they're leaders. "It's important for them to be there, but we can never ...

Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel slam Qatar World Cup over player concerns

Image
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expressed their discontent with the midseason World Cup in Qatar over concerns of the demands on their players. Tuchel said that players could be affected in the months before and after the World Cup in Qatar, adding that the emotions and demands of soccer's showpiece tournament could leave footballers drained. Klopp said it makes him "angry" and that football's governing bodies could do more to protect the players. The Premier League's 2022-23 season will be paused from Nov. 12 to accommodate the World Cup, which runs from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18, and will resume on Boxing Day. "It doesn't make so much sense," Tuchel said in a news conference on Friday. "The players are very focused on the World Cup already which is a good thing because they come in shape and take care of themselves. "But it's also a bad thing because they are also focused on World Cup and not just here. We will ...

Demand for private jets to Qatar soars as FIFA World Cup 2022 nears

Image
Demand for private jets to Qatar has surged ahead of the country's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November, according to an industry source. DC Aviation Al-Futtaim (DCAF), a joint venture between Dubai-based conglomerate Al-Futtaim and Germany's DC Aviation GmbH, said that there has been a "surge in requests" from customers looking to fly privately to Doha, Qatar towards the end of the year. The football World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18 this year, is expected to add $17 billion to the Qatar's economy. "We have seen a sharp increase in enquiries for the later stages of the tournament from the first week of December until the finals, which take place on December 18," said Holger Ostheimer, DC Aviation Al-Futtaim managing director. 2030 World Cup: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay bid to be joint hosts

Image
Uruguay hosted the competition's first ever tournament in 1930 and say they want to bring the World Cup "home" when it celebrates its centenary. "This is the dream of a continent," said Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol). Spain and Portugal have also announced a bid to be joint hosts. Uruguay beat Argentina in the final to win the inaugural World Cup in 1930 and Dominguez was speaking at the scene of that win - Montevideo's Centenario Stadium. "There will be more World Cups, but the cup only turns 100 one time, and it needs to come home," added Dominguez. Chile hosted the World Cup in 1962, while the tournament was held in Argentina in 1978. "It's right for the World Cup to be hosted where it all began, 100 years later," said Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association. The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar while Canada, Mexico and the USA will be joint hosts...

Kit Leak: Germany’s new home shirt for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Image
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is now only three months away, and new kits for the participating teams are being released one after another. So, what will the German contingent from Bayern Munich be wearing? The kit has not been officially released, but Footy Headlines, who are usually very trustworthy with their leaks, has issued a semi-official leak. This is how Hansi Flick’s side will suit up at the upcoming World Cup. The base of the shirt is white as usual, but there is a massive thick black stripe that splits the shirt from top to bottom. The adidas logo and the DFB badge are smack in the middle of the shirt, which seems to be a common theme with Germany shirts nowadays - the Frauen (congratulations to them on a successful Euro tournament, by the way) also wear jerseys that have the logos in the middle. It looks to be a rather polarizing design. While some of the reception from the BFW newsroom seems positive, this writer finds it to be the most ghastly Germany shirt of the past decade....

Qatar World Cup 2022: How football became a game-changer for the Middle East

Image
Football is shaping national identities and regional geopolitics in the Middle East and North Africa, and Gulf states' huge investments in European clubs are key to their soft-power strategies These stories showcase the ubiquitous place that football has come to hold in the Middle East and, in turn, the region’s impact on football globally The headline story in world football this summer concerned young French phenomenon Kylian Mbappe's decision to sign a three-year contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the expense of pursuing his lifelong dream move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. PSG, which is owned by the state-funded Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), made the 23-year-old Mbappe the highest-paid footballer in the world, and even reportedly gave him a $125m signing bonus, a virtually unheard of fee for a team retaining its own player. In a far less reported story, in late May the Argentine national football team cancelled a scheduled friendly match against Israel,...
