Qatar's World Cup stadium stands are set to be alcohol-free, with beer sales outside arenas only allowed before and after some matches, a source with knowledge of plans for the soccer tournament said. This year's World Cup is the first to be held in a Muslim country with strict controls on alcohol, presenting unique challenges for organisers of an event often associated with beer drinking fans and sponsored by global brewing brands. "At stadiums, the plans are still being finalised, but the current discussion is to allow fans to have beer upon arrival and when leaving stadium, but beer won't be served during the match or inside the stadium bowl," the source told Reuters. Qatar World Cup 2022 will kick off on November 21 with the final taking place on December 18. Three-quarters of the teams at the World Cup in Qatar this year will be based within a 10km (six miles) radius of each other, football’s world governing body has said while announcing the hotels and training venues for the 32 sides. Unlike in previous tournaments, every team will stay in the same hotel and use the same training base throughout the tournament. “Players will have more time to train and rest during the competition while being able to experience the excitement that will take over the country at much closer quarters, as fellow players and passionate fans from all 32 nations will be gathering in a single area,” said Colin Smith, FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer – World Cup. FIFA and Qatar are recruiting 20,000 volunteers for the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world, which will be held in eight state-of-the-art stadiums from 21 November to 18 December. Volunteers will be at the heart of tournament operations, supporting 45 functional areas and more than 30 different roles.
